TSOMOV on "Never Again":

SAAB, IT'S NOT JUST A BORING CAR: Never Again? Don't they mean Never No More?... Check off Rodney Rowland, that leaves only Lanei Chapman and Joel de la Fuente from the ensemble cast yet to make an appearance on The X-Files... Hard Eight Lounge -- so that's what Morgan and Wong's production company is up to now... Have I mentioned that I really miss 'Space: Above and Beyond' before?.......

AND ONE MORE?: 'My brother, twenty years later... I still miss you. We know what you did was right' -- either that is an old card at the Memorial (the evacuation of Saigon took place almost 22 years ago on April 30, 1975) or maybe M&W are delivering a message about S:AAB or Darin...

WHO GETS CUSTODY OF THE FISH?: the way Mulder and Scully are talking, it sure sounds like they're married -- separate vacations, arguing about furniture

'CONJUNCTION JUNCTION, WHAT'S YOUR FUNCTION?': great Rocky and Bullwinkle gag and with the Partridge Family song this ep has more references to my childhood than Friends... Only thing missing is Schoolhouse Rock -- 'I'm Just a Bill', 'Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here'...

ALMOST MAKES UP FOR ALL THE LENS FLARES: absolutely fantastic shot of Ed Jerse disposing of the beautiful Kaye Schilling (Jillian Fargey, who looks like a younger, cuter, Sharon Stone)... Watch it again! It is (or appears to be) one continuous shot, no edits, from the time Ed enters Kaye's apartment until he opens the cardboard box -- which is actually too small to hold her body -- in the basement... It's great, but not as great as the opening dolly shot of 'Touch of Evil' (and they didn't have Steadicams back then either)...

WHAT'D HE DO? EAT SOME ROAD KILL?: what's with the fit Mulder is having when he calls the office from the middle of nowhere? That isn't helping reception... And why is the extension light in the office still blinking when he is leaving his message?...

NEVER GET A TATTOO OF BANANAS OR LEMONS: rye grass -- who cares?! Comrade Svo says he used URINE as a dye in Soviet prison!!! And what else does he use on Betty to make it smoke so much when Ed 'gives her a cigarette'?... As for a tattoo, the Millennium logo, whatever it is called, is a better choice than the exploding bean sprouts in the XF opening...

ELVIS LIVES!: of course Mulder is at Graceland, he's looking for the spaceship the King used to come to this planet... Those sunglasses -- ugh, what happened to fashion in the '70s?...

MAYBE HE PRINTS HIS OWN LIKE JIM ROCKFORD: an error on Ed's card -- it is PA, not P.A., for Pennsylvania...

AND THE CHECK'S IN THE MAIL: which is more unusual, the Jehovah's Witnesses leaving Ed's apartment so quickly or their surprise that Kaye isn't home when they return even though she said she would be there?...

SKINNER-ITIS: Ed suffers from the same thing Skinner does -- he suddenly has a ring on when he is dressing Betty before his date with Scully... And it's the same ring Cooper Hawkes will be wearing in 2063 AD ...

'YOU LOOK MARVELOUS!': I guess it's better to look good than feel good because Ed and Scully don't bother with coats even though there is a supposed storm that night...

MMM, BACK: great scene, with terrific music, of Scully getting her tattoo... Won't Mulder be surprised the next time he checks Scully for mosquito bites ...

MAYBE THEY HAD GARLIC FOR LUNCH: some 'kiss' by Ed and Scully -- I believe there is absolutely NO lip-to-lip contact!!! When the camera moves around them, it appears their lips missed the mark...

ENGLISH, THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO BE: apparently the FBI's Forensic Information Database was spell-checked by a Canadian or Brit -- 'behavioural' has the 'u' like it should ...

WELCOME TO THE X-FILES PODIATRY NEWSLETTER: major Scully foot alert! First, when she picks up her badge from Ed's floor we get a nice close-up; followed closely by her putting on her shoes (which is combined with another back shot ); then, as she returns to the basement grotto, we get the full shoes-and-calves treatment ... Oh, we get to see the bottom of Mulder's sneaker sometime near the beginning of the ep, too...

EVEN THE SUN WILL BURN OUT EVENTUALLY: the streak had to end sometime, they actually apprehend someone who may make it to trial -- the first time this season... Everyone else either died (or is on the verge of dying) or escaped...

HAS ANYONE TOLD AL FRANKEN?:
Scully: 'Not everything is about you, Mulder. This is my life.'
Mulder: 'Yes, but it's m...'
As Al Franken stated on Saturday Night Live in 1979, the '70s were the 'Me' decade and the '80s would be the 'Al Franken' decade... I guess the '90s are the 'Fox Mulder' decade...

TSOMOV on "Memento Mori":

AT LEAST SHE DOESN'T HAVE TOURRETTES SYNDROME: Scully's voice-overs are eloquent and beautiful (and illustrate the inappropriateness of Scully's 'nail him' in her Ghost in the Machine field journal)...

KNOCK, KNOCK: ah, the vagaries of production -- the sound editor puts in a door opening sound despite the oncology dept. viewing room door being (deliberately) ajar for Mulder's entrance during filming...

RANDY PERRY MUST BE HAPPY : this is such a Scully episode, not just for the storyline but because of Rob Bowman's direction -- when informing A.D. Skinner of her condition, Scully is stoic in the foreground while Mulder is fidgety in the background... And to question Kurt Crawford (David Lovgren, God forgive me if I get the name wrong), Scully moves into the strong foreground position while Mulder remains in the murky background... Also, after/during each Scully voice-over Mulder is running around rather stupidly...

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING?: why is a realtor running the 'garage sale' at Betsy Hagopian's house? Is she actually selling the garage?...

IS AUNT BEE BRINGING HER FRIED CHICKEN FOR LUNCH?: Mulder and Scully have just arrested Kurt so they take him... to their hotel room?!...

WHAT HAPPENED TO 'TRUST NO ONE'?: Mulder's faith in Kurt is pretty quick considering Kurt could know a lot because he is telling the truth OR he is part of the conspiracy... Did all the MUFON members die friend-less and family-less as well as infertile? Couldn't Mulder and Scully cross-check Kurt's story by talking to friends/family of the members, a list of whom should be somewhere...

WHAT WAS SHE RUNNING, THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS?: Betsy died 2 1/2 weeks ago, Kurt is either only starting to download the files now or is in the middle of a huge job (or has he been text capturing everything like the stupid COS in Ghost in the Machine)...

MAYBE HE CAN CLAIM MILEAGE ON HIS EXPENSES: Gray-Haired Man (Morris Paynch, who also appeared in F. Emasculata as Dr. Auerbach) is waiting outside Betsy's house. When Mulder leaves, he starts his car and moves ahead 25 feet, why?... As for the people on the sidewalk, I don't think they are 'witnesses' because I think they are members of the crew or sightseers watching the shoot -- it's late, it's freezing, and one person is sitting on the grass!!! And you can see the lights of one of the production trucks (probably the genny) behind them...

HAVE THEY LOOKED IN THE BIOSPHERE?: so where the heck are the Scully brothers?...

MOVIE AND CARTOON MEMORY I: when Scully is getting her PET scan (?), the mask reminds me of Hannibal Lecter's mask in 'The Silence of the Lambs'... And while the device probably doesn't cause claustrophobia, the lens assembly coming down reminds me of the pile driver that invariably gets Sylvester, the Puddy Cat...

MAGIC DECODER SNOWDOME: I know passwords are supposedly never random, but, come on, first guess?!!!... Vegreville, Alta. -- location of the farm in Herrenvolk AND home of a giant Ukrainian Easter egg...

IT IS NOT A PHALLIC SYMBOL, HONEST!: it must have been a while since I've seen Skinner as far down as his hip, because his sidearm strikes me as conspicuous; he doesn't have one in Pusher when Holly beat the c**p out of him...

OPEN MIKE COMEDY NIGHT: we know Cancerman can't write, he isn't very good with the snappy comebacks either -- 'which way is the elevator?', ohhh!, Why not tell Skinner the jerk store called? (ref. Seinfeld)...

MOVIE MEMORY II: for the foreign film fans, Frohike and Langly in the storm drain reminds me of the Troglodins from 'Delicatessen'... I love it when the Lone Gunmen go into the field, they are like a high tech, nerdy version of the Three Stooges... Frohike is awfully calm considering the news about Scully's cancer...

SENDING THIS ONE TO THE REPLAY JUDGES: someone with a really good television check this out -- when Langly is hacking into the security cameras at the research facility, does a picture of Byers EXITING the building appear at least twice on the computer, once even before he's gone in?...

'YOU'RE SO WISHY-WASHY, CHARLIE BROWN': while looking at Scully's gene code (most of which is out of focus for us due to a lack of depth-of-field), Mulder states the research facility could be looking for a cure, but the instant he sees Dr. Kevin Scanlon's name on a listing he decides he is a threat and wants Scully to stop treatment... And instead of sending Byers, why doesn't he use his cell phone to call Scully, her mother or the hospital?...

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER: David Lovgren may not be triplets but he does have the Spock (Leonard Nimoy) arched eyebrow look... And those hybrid tanks -- reminds me of my sea monkey circus, it put Barnum and Bailey to shame ...

IT IS PART OF OUR 'RAW MATERIAL': Penny Northern tells Scully about the abductors, 'human compassion is not something that they have', yet, the hybrids have it -- 'they're our mothers'...

MOVIE MEMORY III: Gray-Haired Man shooting at Mulder through the bullet-proof glass reminds me of Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) shooting at Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) in 'The Fugitive'... (and the locked electronic door shows why the Eurisko building fire exits wouldn't be allowed to have them in Ghost...)...

WILL HE WRAP IT FIRST?: Mulder has given Scully a 'Superstars of the Superbowls' tape and her crucifix back in the past, however, I think returning her ova is a whole other level...

MAYBE HE SHOULD TRY DECAF: what is Skinner drinking? When Cancerman drops his cigarette in Skinner's mug, it makes an incredible amount of smoke...

...TO THE TIPS OF HER TOES: bet you thought I forgot... Well, there are a few interesting foot/shoe shots in this ep... We see Scully in funny white slippers in the teaser, then her bare feet when she sits up on the hospital bed and finally an unusual soles view during her PET scan...

TSOMOV on "Tempus Fugit":

MAYBE HE IS FLYING STAND-BY: wonder why the bald gunman on the plane is using a composite gun? He obviously is working for people who could have easily smuggled a metal gun on board for him... Oh well, it is a neat prop...

PAYBACK'S A BITCH: is Scully's birthday dinner, complete with singing waiters, Mulder's way of getting even with her for shooting him?... r maybe it's Mulder's embarrassing statements in front of the entire crash investigation team? So reminiscent of Season 1... And what embarrassing thing does Scully think Sharon might be part of -- a strip-o-gram?...

HOW MUCH DAYLIGHT COULD THEY POSSIBLY SAVE?: Scully's birthday is Feb. 23 (according to 'The Truth Is Out There'), 6 weeks before daylight savings time starts, yet the last radio contact with Flt. 549 is originally reported to be 1900 EDT... It being February would explain why the remains don't need to be refrigerated...

HAIR CLUB FOR MEN OR MURDER, INC.?: we've had bad guys called Crew-Cut Man, Red-Haired Man, Gray-Haired Man and now Dark Man(?)... Also, nice touch to have the NTSB mole (Garrett) smooth his hair as the crash investigation team meeting breaks up...

TAKES A LICKING BUT DOESN'T KEEP ON TICKING: guess no one on the plane was wearing a Timex... All the aircraft and times are kind of confusing -- (I think) 549 is spotted on radar in upper New York state at 1900 EST, but a (US-built, alien-design?) interceptor 'enters its airspace' at 2 minutes past 30 degrees North (probably Pensacola, Fla., over 1000 miles away!), somehow catches up to 549 then 'shadows' it for 10 minutes, then accidentally brings it down at 7:52 PM (the true time of the last radio contact) while attacking the alien craft responsible for the 9 minutes 549 has lost... This same interceptor is searching the 549 crash site when Sharon is returned...

(Note: this turns out to be somewhat incorrect... the interceptor is an F-15 and the '2 minutes past 30 degrees North' -- which rightly refers to latitude -- is actually a bearing from 549 to the F-15, just bad dialogue)...

HE NEEDS THAT LIKE A HOLE IN THE...: regardless of whether Sgt. Gonzales' suicide is legitimate or not, why is his wound in the forehead instead of the temple or in the mouth?...

HE NEEDS MOUTH-TO-MOUTH: Agent Pendrell (unintentionally) takes a bullet for Scully! -- is it the ultimate sacrifice by Pendrell or will he get a mercy date out of it?...

MOVIE MEMORY: Mulder may never have dived before but he is good, too good perhaps... He even does a decent Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws) impersonation as he spots the alien body...

GUESS RATBOY AND CANCERMAN WERE TOO BUSY PLOTTING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD TO MAKE IT: they must have been desperate for Canadian content this ep -- Max Fenig (Scott Bellis) has absolutely no lines -- NONE! -- and Pendrell (Brendan Beiser) has maybe 4 lines, and combined they have perhaps 3 minutes screen time... I'm sure Max will somehow play a bigger role in the second half...

DODGED A BULLET: Max's importance to this episode SEEMS so tenuous that we should consider ourselves lucky FOX decided to re-run 'Fallen Angel' and not 'Space' (considering Mulder's birthday present to Scully) the week before...

...THEN I MET A MAN WITH NO FEET: no Scully feet/shoe shots in this ep! But we get to see what Scully wears to bed.

TSOMOV on "Max":

I wonder if Max left a 'Close In-counters of the Threesome Kind' porno tape to Mulder in his
will? ........

It's taken a while but I think I finally have a good idea of what happened to Flight 549 time-wise and watch-wise:

1900h - Flt. 549 appears on Sgt. Frish's radar screen.
19??h - An F-15 is sent to intercept 549 and approaches bearing '2 minutes past 30 degrees

North'.
1952h - Last radio contact with 549 is made as an alien craft takes control; on-board watches
continue to function normally (as in the pilot ep); the F-15 'shadows 549 (and the alien
craft) for 10 minutes' (actually less than 9 minutes) as Frish states.
2001h - The F-15 fires on the alien craft, bringing it and 549 down; on-board watches stop at
8:01 due to the crash.

The cover-up perpetuates the 7:52 PM time, as if the 9 minute alien encounter never occurred, hence the difference in the watches and the 'official story'...

SPECTRE RULES!: Mulder's scuba adventure reminds me so much of the great undersea battle in 'Thunderball', that I wouldn't be surprised if the Consortium turns out to be SPECTRE and Chubby Italian Guy is Emilio Largo Jr. ... But why does Mulder drop his tank by the alien wreckage instead of swimming closer to shore first?...

TIME AND AGAIN: major screw-up to repeat Pendrell's shooting -- it has already occurred, we are reminded of it in the 'Previously seen on The X-Files' bit, so repeating it moves us back in time... Not to mention the numerous blatant continuity errors...

ZEN AND MARKSMANSHIP: maybe if she doesn't close her eyes, Scully might hit what she is aiming for... And while I don't expect her to leave Pendrell's side, she could at least tell someone the shooter is wounded and to look for a blood trail, but she doesn't, so Garrett gets away, apparently limp-free too...

TWO MINUTE WARNING: just about everyone who has more than a few seconds but less than a few minutes of screen time is killed in this 2-parter -- Brendan Beiser's Agent Pendrell is shot (again), dies (without any lines) and is not seen again before his name even appears in the 2nd half credits; Scott Bellis' Max Fenig actually gets to talk this half but only via old videotapes; the guy with the plastic gun (Dark Man?), after dying in the first half, still has no lines in the 2nd half re-enactment; and, in the 1st half, Sgt. Gonzales dies but has a few lines, in the 2nd, he is alive but has no lines...

SHE'S A DOCTOR, SHE KNOWS ABOUT 'SHRINKAGE': when Scully averts her eyes as Mulder is changing after being released, he should protest, 'Hey, that water was really COLD and I was in it a LONG time!' ...

NOT-SO-SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES: instead of playing 'Unmarked Helicopters' on Max's tape deck, Chris Carter should have played a message telling all the boys and girls to go into their mommy's and daddy's wallets and send him all the little bits of green paper (Ref. Soupy Sales)...

SOME KIND OF HERO: when Mulder tells Scully, and later Millar, that Max 'knew that plane was in danger even before it took off' but he took the risk anyway, he makes Max sound like a hero for getting on 549 -- but if he didn't get on 549, it wouldn't have been intercepted by the aliens and ultimately crash...

BECAUSE GERALDO ALREADY FOUND AL CAPONE'S VAULT: Scully thinks Mulder and Max may be kindred spirits, but Mulder may be kindred spirits with Pierre Salinger, considering his thoughts on TWA 800... What's Salinger trying to do? Get a job with the National Enquirer?...

TRY DE-CAF: judging from her work on Max's videos, Sharon looks like she's ready to shoot the next 'Alien Autopsy Video' ...

THE ALIEN VERSION OF THE CLOWN CAR: assuming the downed UFO is the same design as the searching one, there seem to be a lot of bodies for such a small craft... And it finally hit me that the military-industrial community is more interested in the alien technology than the aliens themselves, while the Consortium is the opposite...

'...COURTESY OF FRED'S TWO FEET...': the frequency they are re-using scenes lately makes me feel like I'm in Bedrock and Fred and Barney are driving past the same building every few seconds ...

THEY COULD DO A LOT WORSE: Mike Millar thinks Mulder's 'whopper' is 'a good story, maybe (Mulder) could sell it to the movies'... If the XF movie is this kind of good old-fashioned adventure/mystery, I'd be very happy -- it's not a monster of the week nor does the Consortium get involved to muddy the waters...

YOU MEAN THE ONE ON PLANET EARTH?: the way Mulder just ignores all airport security measures and carries his gun everywhere, including onto a plane, it may have been possible that he was in Syracuse, 'Sicily', not Syracuse, 'New York', as he specifies when Scully calls...

BETTER THAN X-RAY SPECS: the piece of alien technology that Mulder finds is radioactive so it is in a protective container, yet the airport x-ray machine can penetrate this container allowing Mulder a silhouette view?...

WHAT'S YOUR SIGN?: when Garrett approaches Mulder on Flight 501, he sounds like he's trying to pick him up... And why hasn't Garrett changed his pants?...

JUST ASK D.B. COOPER: Garrett wouldn't stand a chance of surviving a parachute jump from the jetliner -- the cold, wind and lack of oxygen would most likely kill him if the turbulence didn't tear him or the lightweight parachute apart first... And even if he managed to survive the jump, he isn't outfitted to survive a night in the Adirondacks... Once again, if they could smuggle a parachute aboard why not a normal gun?...

IT'S RIGHT NEXT TO THE BIDET: there is no BATHROOM on an airplane! There is no bath in the little room... It is a lavatory, washroom or restroom... Or maybe it's an American thing...

THE FLY IN THE OINTMENT: my above time and watch theory works fine except for why Mulder's watch stops when 501 is intercepted... Maybe it's just a cheap watch, the Swiss NAVY brand ... And these aliens are very precise -- it's always 9 minutes for a short encounter -- maybe they're really Swiss... Or the Swiss are the aliens bankers now that the Swiss have to repay all the 'looted' Jewish deposits...
